Up from the ground

From here we saw the ruins of Capernaum, Chorazim, and Kursi. At Capernaum there has been a church built at the place of Peter's mother in laws house. It looks like a spaceship landed here. Mark 1:21 begins a long day of ministry in Capernaum. Dr. V. challenges us to have a strong work ethic.

The next two ruins did not have much distinction. They were small and not too interesting. this is the stuff that could be replaced with the afternoon off. At one point I turn to someone and say "Where are we?" They answer "I don't know." I think many had the same answer. But at the end of one of the sites my wife and I sat under a tree and talked. This made it worth it. In the afternoon we went to the Jordan River for a baptism. Three from our groups were baptized. The river is much smaller than you would think. You could throw a ball across it. The site we went to was a commercialized baptism site complete with stadium seating and DVD making and purchasing. There were also large catfish swimming in the water. This was a nice thing. It turned surreal when four large European ladies approached the water wearing their white baptismal gowns provided by the place. They wade out in the water and holding a fence baptize themselves in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost by plunging themselves under three times quickly. At some point one of the girls of our group warns "Do not look over there." One of the ladies apparently was wearing nothing under her gown and it was very visible. I am pretty sure no one looked...or even wanted to.

While awaiting for the people in our group to dry off and change we had an interesting talk with Dave the pilot. Mark is like a celebrity addict and was peppering him with questions about which celebrities he has flown and what they were like and what they wore and what they ate and on and on (somewhat embellished...somewhat). I joke with Mark about this often. But when I heard that Dave had flown Andre the Giant I almost burst with joy. Mark made fun of how interested I was...he was right. But at least it was only about one interesting guy and not about someone like Bill Wennington or other backup Bulls centers.

We end our day at a movie called the Galilee Experience. It was supposedly multi-media but by that I think they meant start two DVD players at the same time. It was OK but probably would have been better if we saw it on our first day. The place reminded me of what you would see at a tourist place like Wisconsin Dells or Branson. It was like a Ripley's Believe or Not or Wax Museum place. But the guy who runs it uses it as an evangelistic tool. It is a cool thought. Following the movie I had an amazing passion fruit smoothie by the seashore. It was great and I had a few more on the trip.
